To enable cement to perform effectively in complex downhole environments, we must add a “magic potion”—additives. There are over 200 types of oilwell cement additives worldwide, and China has already mastered the core technologies.

Set-retarding agent: Delays the setting time and is suitable for ultra-deep wells under high temperatures (e.g., lignosulfonate, dosage: 0.1% to 1%).

Coagulant: Shortens the setting time, enabling faster shallow well construction (e.g., calcium chloride, which achieves final setting in just 4 minutes).

Fluid-loss additive: Reduces water loss from cement slurry and prevents formation plugging (carboxymethyl cellulose; fluid-loss volume can be as low as 25 ml/30 min).

Drag-reducing agent: Makes cement slurry as smooth as “milk tea,” reducing pumping effort by 50% (naphthalene-based drag-reducing agent, with a 20% reduction in the water-to-cement ratio).
